The reading list that follows is the assignment list for the Big Haus Lieutenancy. It is a collection, not of the best things ever written, nor of all that should be read, but of works which we considered influential in our outlook and lives. We ask our lieutenants to read 5-7 assigned works over approximately two weeks, taking notes on ideas, quotes, and questions they encountered. Then, during a scheduled conversation of about three hours, we talk through those thoughts. We are not expecting the lieutenant to see what we saw or benefit in necessarily the same way as we, but rather that their engagement with the material would rapidly draw them forward in the progress of the soul.
